Install Tile Over Durock

Tile floors may be installed on a solid surface such as Durock.

Durock is a brand of cement backer board. Backer board is commonly used in household projects to add support and stability to surfaces that are otherwise noncompatible with tile surfacing. As with wood, the backer board will add height to the floor, so you may need to adjust your room transitions accordingly.

Instructions

1. Install the Durock boards by attaching them to the wood subfloor with 1 1/4-inch corrosion-resistant nails in a nail gun. The nails should be spaced 6 inches apart along the center of the boards.

2. Lay down a waterproof barrier if you are working in a wet area, such as the shower.

3. Measure the room, and mark out your working grid. If you are working with large ceramic tiles, mark off sections every 3 square feet. If you are working with small tiles, mark off sections every square foot.

4. Apply a thin bead of tile glue diagonally over the entire grid square.

5. Lay the tile onto the glue, then pull the tile up to activate the glue. Leave the tile up for 30 seconds, then apply a second time, and press down firmly.

6. Wait the manufacturer's recommended time for the glue to dry.

7. Apply the grout with a grout float, getting as much as possible into the cracks. Leave it to cure for the manufacturer's recommended time.
