Remove Air Bubbles in Drywall Tape
After you have applied drywall mud and tape, you may notice that you have a bubble in the drywall tape. The bubble could be the result of not enough joint compound applied prior to the drywall tape or it could be that you didn't smooth the tape out enough when applying the tape to the drywall. For whatever reason, you must fix the bubble, which does not require removing the entire piece of drywall tape.
Instructions
1. Make an "X" in the bubble with the utility knife. Fold back the drywall tape that you just made an "X" in to expose the joint compound underneath the tape.
2. Scrape away the dried joint compound in the exposed area using the utility knife or 2-inch putty knife. Remove as much of the dried joint compound as you can without ripping the drywall tape or nicking the drywall.
3. Apply a layer of joint compound in the hole. Spread the compound out so it is smooth. Press the pieces of drywall tape that you cut, back into the joint compound. Use the putty knife to smooth the tape over the compound.
4. Apply a thin layer of joint compound over the tape to seal. The compound must be smooth. Allow it to dry 24 hours.
5. Apply another thin layer of compound the next day and smooth out. Let it dry for 24 hours. The next day, you can lightly sand if needed. Prime and paint as usual.
