Mold A Mask

By making a mold of a mask you can reproduce it multiple times.

Around Halloween time, people buy masks like crazy, getting ready for the big night. Some of those masks are rare and unique, and some are even one-of-a-kind. To replicate one of those custom masks, you need to make a mold. This creates a negative image of the mask, which you use to create multiple copies of the original mask. Molding the mask is a tricky process and takes a few hours to do properly.

Instructions

1. Put the mask on top of the plastic foam head. Create a line of 1-inch-thick clay using the sculpting tools that runs from the ears, up across the top of the skull, to the other side of the head to create a dividing line separating the front and back halves of the mold. Apply the spray fixative over the mask and clay.

2. Cut the burlap into 10-inch-long strips using the scissors. Mix the industrial gypsum in a bucket with water using the mixing stick according to the directions on the industrial gypsum bag.

3. Apply the industrial gypsum to the front half of the mask using the chip brush. Apply the burlap strips on top of the industrial gypsum layer, including on top of the clay wall you created in Step 1. Mix up a second batch of industrial gypsum and apply that on top of the burlap with the chip brush. Mix a third and final batch of industrial gypsum and apply it to the top of the second layer. Allow it to dry.

4. Peel off the clay wall you created in Step 1, which creates a wall of industrial gypsum on the front of the mold. Apply the petroleum jelly to the inside of the wall created by the industrial gypsum.

5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the back half of the mold. Allow the industrial gypsum to cure again, then pry apart the front and back of the mold using the flathead screwdrivers.
