Install Durock On Flooring

Durock installed in a shower provides a stable base for the floor tiles.

Durock is a cement-based board made by the United States Gypsum Co. It's water- and mold-resisting qualities makes it the perfect product to install under tiles and in areas where moisture may be present. Additionally, it can be installed in either interior or exterior circumstances. Installing the product onto the floor is a very easy and straightforward process. Upon the completion of the installation, you have a sturdy mold- and water-resistant base upon which to install tiles of your choice.

Instructions

1. Determine the amount of Durock you will need for your application. Use a measuring tape and measure the length and width of the floor. Multiply these two results to determine the amount of square footage you will be covering. For example, a 12-foot-by-12-foot room will need enough Durock to cover 144 square feet. Use a calculator if needed to ensure you purchase enough Durock for your project.

2. Find the center of the room. Divide the length of the room by half. At that point, measure across the width of the room to half of the width measurement. Mark the point where these two measurements intersect with a pencil.

3. Install the first sheet of Durock at the intersecting mark on the floor. Use galvanized nails or screws to secure the sheet to the sub-floor. Leave enough room for the next piece of Durock to connect to the installed sheet in a tongue-and-groove fashion.

4. Install the second sheet of the Durock by matching the tongue-and-groove sections of the two sheets. Attach the second sheet to the sub-floor in the same manner as before.

5. Continue to install all full sheets of Durock in the same manner until you are unable to install any further full sheets.

6. Measure the length and width of the first section that must be cut. Use a pencil to transfer the measurement to the Durock board, being sure that the finished cut piece will fit into the previous board. Use a carbide-tipped cement board knife to score the sheet. Stand behind the sheet with the scored line facing away from you. Use your hands to pull the edge of the board against your knee. This causes the cut portion of the board to separate from the rest of the board.

7. Continue to measure, mark and cut all remaining pieces and install to the sub-floor as described before until the floor is covered with your Durock installation.
