The bright red fruit of the pomegranate poses some dangers when consumed.
The purplish-red, succulent fruit known as a pomegranate is filled with juicy, edible seeds. Available fresh from September to January, pomegranates make tasty juices, garnishes and a light snack. Usually the size of an apple, you must crack open the leather-like shell to reach the only edible portion of the fruit-- the seeds, called "arils." While touted for it's health benefits, pomegranates also pose disadvantages and health risks. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Stain
Staining remains a major concern of eating and handling pomegranates. The dark pigment of the fruit easily transfers to skin and materials. It may take several attempts at washing and a few days before pomegranate stain removes from skin. Avoid wearing white fabrics or delicate linens when consuming the fruit to prevent ruining the item or costly dry cleaning bills.
Statin
Statins help reduce cholesterol and improve heart health. However, side effects of these drugs include decreased activity and energy levels as well as fatigue. Drinking pomegranate juice rests as a common approach to counteracting such side effects. Statin patients commonly associate the antioxidant properties of the beverage with relief from it's effects. However, recent research suggests that pomegranate juice actually increases the drug level and increases the susceptibility of experiencing side effects, according to study published in the journal "Drug Metabolism and Disposition" on January 26, 2005.
Medication
Pomegranates contain massive amounts of antioxidants. The propensity of the fruit rivals the antioxidant polyphenols, the chemical property capable of neutralizing damaging effects of free radicals, of blueberries, green tea and red wine. But, the juice of the pomegranate tends to inhibit enzymes related to the metabolism of some drugs. To avoid interaction between pomegranates and medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing the two substances.
Allergy
Allergic reactions to pomegranates remain rare, but still possible. If you have previously experienced an allergic reaction to any fruit, consuming pomegranates may pose a disadvantage to you. Characterized by hives, itching, sudden appearance of rash and swelling, allergic reactions require immediate medical intervention. If you believe you may suffer from an allergic reaction, avoid the fruit or undergo testing within a controlled environment.
Diet
The disadvantage of a pomegranate infused diet relates to too much of a good thing. Overeating pomegranates can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
