Fresh paint Type 1 Drywall

All drywall requires proper preparation before it can be painted.

Type 1 drywall is regular gypsum wallboard, according to the Gypsum Association. Type 2 is also known as Type X, or fire-resistant drywall. Type 3 drywall is foil-backed. Drywall, regardless of type, requires preparation before you can begin painting. Freshly installed drywall has had joint tape and joint compound applied, and the joint compound has been sanded to make it smooth and level. That means there are differences in texture and coloration over the drywall surface. In addition, the new drywall will likely require several coats of primer and paint before it stops soaking up the paint.

Instructions

1. Remove the sanding dust from the newly installed drywall with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a brush attachment, then wipe down the walls with a tack cloth. This will ensure primer will adhere to the drywall surface.

2. Place painter's tape over trim areas that you do not want to coat with primer or paint. This includes floor molding, crown molding and window molding.

3. Pour Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) primer into a paint pan, and use a 3/4-inch paint roller to apply the primer. PVA primer is formulated for use on new drywall. Do not skip this step. Apply the paint in a wide W pattern. Apply one complete coat, then give the primer time to dry before moving on to the next step. If you can see white or green spots through the primer, apply a second coat.

4. Pour semi-gloss or flat latex paint into a paint pan and apply the paint with a 3/4-inch roller. Again, use a wide W pattern and overlap strokes to achieve an even application of paint. Allow the paint adequate time to dry, then add a second coat.
