Fungus & Illness

Black Mold & Illness

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is a type of mold that commonly grows indoors, especially in moist locations. Although molds present some health risks, black mold is not more dangerous than other types of mold and will not affect many people.

Mold Contamination Effects

Although mold does not always represent a health danger, it may cause allergic reactions, asthma attacks, or respiratory infections.

Risk Factors for Health Issues

You are more likely to develop health problems related to mold if you have allergies, immune suppression, or lung disease.

Preventing Mold

Prevent mold growth by keeping humidity levels low, using a dehumidifier if necessary, and limiting water leakage from leaky plumbing and condensation.

Flooding

The moisture caused by floods presents a high risk of mold growth. Use fans, dehumidifiers, and a vacuum or sump pump to remove water and dry out soaked areas.

Mold Removal

Remove mold contaminations by cleaning hard surfaces with detergent and water, allowing them to dry completely. Absorbent materials that have been contaminated, including carpet, paper, and ceiling tiles, should be replaced.
