Gypsum is a mineral that has many properties. It is usually found in crystal form and is somewhat flexible. It has almost the same composition as anhydrite, except it has water in it. It is created in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Gypsum is an important mineral, as it is used in many products. It's found in fertilizer and cement and is the primary ingredient of sheet-rock. Gypsum is also a major component of plaster-of-Paris and other Gypsum composites, which you use to make models and castings.
Instructions
1. Check the mold you will be using to make sure it doesn't haven't any flaws. If you find any, patch them with plaster or clay. If you are working with a porous material, seal it before using it.
2. Measure the liquid activator that you will add to the gypsum mix. Follow the ratio of water to mix specified by the manufacturer. The activator is water, unless you are working with a kit that has a special liquid included. If you are working with a kit, follow the instructions.
3. Add the gypsum mix to the water. It should sink to the bottom of the container. Allow the mixture to soak for about four minutes before stirring.
4. Stir the gypsum mix and water carefully. You want to avoid mixing in a lot of air. Make sure the mix is smooth. Do not stir it for too long, as you will want to pour it before it begins to set.
5. Pour the mix into the mold as soon as possible. You will need to leave the mold to set. The time will vary depending on the size, amount of water used and type of gypsum mix. Follow the manufacturer's suggestions.
