Cribbage Board Types
Cribbage is one the few card games around played with a board or object accompanying it. Cribbage is a very old, dating back to the 1600s, when it was created from a variation of another game known as Noddy. The cribbage board is a useful scoring device, and makes a cribbage game move along very quickly. There are many different kinds of boards, but they all do the same thing: scoring.
60 Boards
The first type of cribbage board is the 60 board. There isn't an actual name for them, but they are known for having only 60 holes drilled into them. Since a typical cribbage game is played to 121 points, in order to play with this board, you must go around the board twice. These kinds of boards can be made of all kinds of materials, including wood, glass, and different kinds of metal. The pegs that come with these boards are usually plastic or metal. Some 60 boards come with a hinged compartment, which allows the owner to store a pack or two of cards inside the board during nonuse.
Continuous Boards
Continuous boards are named as such because they follow one cribbage game continuously around the board. Instead of the 60 boards that require the player to go around twice, the continuous board has all 121 pegs drilled out for one game. As with 60 boards, they come in the same kinds of materials, such as wooden, glass, and different kinds of metals. The pegs as well are usually plastic or metal, depending on the board. They can also come hinged, as well as able to fold in half for easier storage.
29 Boards
29 boards are named as such because they are in the shape of the number 29. The number 29 has significant value in the game of cribbage, as it is the highest score you can receive with one hand. They are also continuous boards, allowing for one game of cribbage to be played on them. 29 boards are usually made of wood with plastic or metal pegs accompanying them. Some 29 boards will also have the hand required to receive 29 points, which is that of three fives and a jack with a five as the starter card.
