Egyptians and Greeks used plaster of Paris to create statues.
Plaster of Paris results from the calcination of a sedimentary rock called gypsum. The Egyptians and Greeks used gypsum plaster to create monuments, statues, and molds of human bodies; the oldest records of plaster moldings are at least 9,000 years old. Today, artists, creative individuals and even children use plaster of Paris for the same purposes it was used for thousands of years ago. Before creating a work of art, the artist learns prepare plaster of Paris for modeling.
Instructions
1. Fill the basin half full with water and place it on a flat surface. Grab a handful of plaster powder and let the powder sift through your hand into the water. Rub your thumb over your fingers to get rid of clumps as you release the powder. Sprinkle the powder evenly over the surface of the water.
2. Continue to add powder using the same technique until the water is completely filled. Add powder until it leaves a dry layer on the surface of the water. Do not stir or disturb the water for two minutes.
3. Take the spoon and gently stir the mixture. Move the spoon through the top and bottom layers of the mixture to stir it thoroughly and release air bubbles. Continue to stir the mixture until it begins to thicken. The finished mixture should be the consistency of pancake batter.
4. Spoon the plaster mixture around the model.
