The Result Of Using Gypsum To Soils

Gypsum, or landplaster, is a calcium sulfate substance. It is used in farming when the soil requires additional calcium. According to the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension, gypsum is often used on peanut crops to provide calcium without affecting the acidity of the soil.


Uses


Gypsum can improve the soil structure when high sodium levels are present. Farmers use gypsum to increase calcium levels for certain crops. Gypsum can also help break up or loosen packed clay or hardpan soils.


Considerations


Gypsum has no affect on the acidity of the soil. Lime should be used to alter the pH balance of soil if necessary. Gypsum can then be added to increase calcium.


Warnings


Gypsum can have negative affects on acid soils which are defined by the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension as soils with a pH less than 5.5. Adding gypsum to these soils can displace aluminum within the soil, which can be toxic to the roots.


Application


Gypsum does not have to be worked into the soil for it to be effective. Simply spread gypsum over the area to be treated and it will work itself into the soil and begin changing the structure over time.


Time Frame


Gypsum will not change the soil structure overnight. According to the experts at Ed Hume Seeds, it generally takes up to three years of annual applications to see a noticeable difference.
