Wallboard Types

Wallboard is available in more than one type.

When drywall wallboard was invented in the 1920s, it was welcomed as a less time-intensive and less expensive replacement for plaster. Its main ingredient is gypsum, which is encased between two layers, providing a durable and easy-to-install material. However, there is more than one type of gypsum wallboard; knowing more about the types of wallboard will enable you to choose the proper material for your project.

Regular

Regular gypsum wallboard is ubiquitous: 1/2 inch thick and 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall. There are other custom sizes which are more expensive, but this is the wallboard that's most readily available.

Type X

Type X is a designation that's given by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) to wallboard that is 5/8 inch thick and has a fire rating of 1 hour or is 1/2 inch think and has a fire rating of 1/2 hour. In other words, this gypsum wallboard has been tested to make sure it can withstand fire for either 1/2 hour or 1 hour, depending on its thickness.

Water Resistant Wallboard

This type of wallboard has a distinctive green paper sheathing. You can use this gypsum wallboard in areas where than can be modest exposure to water, such as behind sinks. This makes it a good choice for a base on which tiles can be installed for back splashes.

Waterproof Wallboard

Waterproof wallboard is gypsum wallboard that has its core protected by a waxy layer. This enables this wallboard to be waterproof, not just water resistant.
