Job Description for Drywall Carpenter
The interior walls of most structures contain drywall or Sheetrock, a layer of gypsum surrounded by paper. Drywall installers or carpenters are the professionals who work with this material.
Features
Drywall carpenters cut pieces of drywall into the appropriate shape and size and then use screws or nails to anchor the pieces to the wooden frames that support walls.
Types
Some drywall carpenters specialize in residences or homes, whereas others focus on commercial construction and remodeling projects at office buildings, stores and other places of business.
Time Frame
The majority of drywall carpenters work at least 40 hours per week, with overtime possible to meet deadlines for jobs, explains the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Requirements
Successful drywall carpenters possess an attention to detail and the ability to perform accurate calculations and measurements of size. The ability to work on their feet and stay in crouched or other awkward positions for long periods of time is important for the work of drywall carpenters, as well as hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Education
Working as a drywall carpenter requires post-secondary education or training, which you can often obtain by simply working as a carpenter's helper, gradually learning skills and taking on more duties. Additional educational opportunities include diploma and associate's degree programs in carpentry and three- to eight-year formal apprenticeships.
Compensation
As of December 2009, the average salary for drywall carpenters is $23,000, according to Indeed.com.
