Ways To Use Bentonite Powder

Bentonite powder

Bentonite powder is rendered from bentonite clay, which is a naturally occurring sodium substance with amazing and sundry properties. Bentonite clay was first discovered in rocks found in Fort Benton, Wyoming. While it is mined throughout the world, some of the largest deposits are found in North America. Few substances can boast the usefulness of bentonite.

Manufacturing Applications

Bentonite is used in oil drilling.

Sodium bentonite powder absorbs liquid, has tremendous swelling ability, is often used in manufacturing and has many allied applications. Because of its excellent stickiness and fireproof-ability, bentonite is often used as a bond and regulator in molding ferrous and nonferrous metals and oil and fat refining. Its bonding capabilities make it suitable for metal casting and, when mixed with clay and sand, it forms an adhesive used in building and sewage reservoirs.

One of the foremost uses of bentonite powder occurs in the oil drilling and mining industries. The extraction of cuttings is a vital part of the oil drilling process. When bentonite is mixed with water or foam it forms a slurry, which is forced down to the drill bit. The slurry aids in raising the cuttings to the surface and aids in achieving a cost-cutting drilling process.

When drilled holes must be filled, bentonite pellets are poured down the hole and water is added. Because the pellets are solid, they float. The pellets swell together and set in place sealing the hole.

Bentonite is an effective water sealing agent used in ditches, ponds and lagoons. It is also used in constructing landfills, wastewater holding facilities when indigenous clay is unavailable and for reconstructing failed landfills.

Household and Health Applications

Bentonite is used in health food protein powders.

Bentonite is sold in health food stores as a dietary supplement. Its amazing absorption properties draw toxins from the body, much like a sponge, before passing from the body as waste. Because of the substance's bonding properties and smooth consistency, it is added to antidiarrheal preparations, a vast number of foods (including candy bars and yogurt), protein powders, baby milk powders, rice milk powders, toothpaste and animal and pet feeds.

Bentonite is also used in other household products, such as cat litter, detergents, cosmetics, medicinal herbal creams, pharmaceutical drugs, anti-irritant lotions for eczema, preparations for colon, kidney and liver detoxification, fungicides, fertilizer applications, ceramics and other products in which bonding properties are required.

Other Uses

Bentonite in water drilling.

Bentonite is also used as a mud element for water well drilling. The substance seals the borehole walls, removes drill cuttings and aids in lubricating the cutting tool. Adding the substance also results in a higher mud yield. The overall results of adding bentonite to the mud on hand include the production of higher barrel yield, minimal loss of drilling fluids and resistance to formation pressure
