Tape & Finish Drywall

Whether you are remodeling a room or home or building a new home, you will be required to know tape and finish drywall. Finishing drywall is not complicated, and you don't have to be a professional carpenter to learn the basics. Once you are comfortable with taping and finishing drywall, you will be able to save money and time by tackling home-improvement projects yourself. There is no need to hire a costly handyman or carpenter when you can remodel your own home to your specifications.

Instructions

1. Place joint compound on a 3- or 4-inch trowel and apply along the drywall joints.

2. Press the reinforcement tape flat on top of wet joint compound and smooth it out with trowel. Sand the dried joint compound smooth using sandpaper. Fill in nail and screw dimples throughout the wall with joint compound and smooth out with the trowel.

3. Apply joint compound to the inside corners. Reinforced tape is folded and pressed into the compound; use the hand trowel to press and smooth out the tape. Place metal corner beads on the outside corners and tap with a hammer to sink the teeth of the metal corners into drywall. Cover the metal corners with joint compound.

4. Place a topcoat of joint compound over the taped joints, inside corners and outside corners. Spread the joint compound 1 or 2 inches wider on each side of joint using the trowel. Sand the joint compound after it has dried, making a smooth surface. Apply a second topcoat over the first topcoat. Sand with the sandpaper once the joint compound has dried.

5. Use a wide trowel to spread the finish coat over the joints. Feather out the joint compound on each side of the joint with the trowel. Sand with a fine sandpaper to ensure that the entire wall is smooth.
