Gypsum has many different uses.
Gypsum board has uses other than covering studs on a wall. If you have a drop ceiling or a suspended ceiling made of metal framing, you can use gypsum board to create tiles. This is cheaper than purchasing pre-cut foam tiles. Before you cut the tiles, ensure the fasteners you used to secure the track framing to the ceiling can withstand the additional weight of the gypsum board.
Instructions
1. Measure the length and width for the opening in the ceiling. The tile must rest on a lip, so when you measure, measure from the center of each lip for an accurate reading.
2. Transfer the measurements to the gypsum board and place pencil marks on the board to locate the exact measurements.
3. Place a straightedge ruler over the marks and run a utility knife through the paper on the outside of the gypsum board. Repeat this for each additional cut you must make.
4. Fold the board over onto itself. This breaks the gypsum inside the board.
5. Run the utility knife through the back paper to completely separate the gypsum tile from the board.
