Gypsum Wallboard Types

Installation of wallboards and framing,

Gypsum board is a product that is also commonly known as drywall and is used as wall board in residential and commercial construction. It generally has paper on each side and is noncombustible, meaning that it is fireproof. Different types of gypsum drywall exist for different purposes; for example a bathroom that is high in moisture content will be a different type from one that is used for living rooms or bedrooms and offices. Be sure to consider what your uses are before your purchase and store it flat and in a dry place to prevent warping or crumbling edges.

A Green Alternative

From American Gypsum, builders can choose Firebloc Type X Gypsum, which is a fire-resistant wallboard that is sheathed in 100 percent recycled natural finish paper on the front side and liner paper on the opposite. This board is 5/8 inches thick and is available in several lengths for customizing construction jobs. Firebloc works well in residential and commercial spaces and for ceilings and walls. Builders can choose from screws, nails or adhesive to attach to wood or metal framing. Through certification from Greenguard, this product is rated for schools and may also be used in LEED certified buildings. The manufacturers recommend that this product always be kept dry to prevent the growth of mold. It is also not advisable that this drywall is stored for long periods of time, and it is recommended that it be used soon after delivery.

Enhanced for Strength

Firecheck Type X from Lafarge North America is enhanced with glass fibers, which offer better fire protection and make a stronger product. The actual core is fire resistant as well as the paper that encases the product on both front and back; additionally this paper is 100 percent recycled. Firecheck Type X is 5/8 inches thick and comes in a width of 48 inches and 54 inches; lengths go from 6 feet to as much as 16 feet. The manufacturer recommends that all board be stored flat and in a dry place to prevent warping and possible mold growth. In addition to standard wall treatment, this brand can be used as a thermal barrier for roof construction. Because the outside paper used to cover it is a light color, this board will easily accommodate decorative wall treatments.

Acoustical Enhancement

For projects in which the quality of sound is paramount, Gold Bond SoundBreak Gypsum Board from National Gypsum is a popular choice. This product is 5/8 inches thick and is acoustically enhanced with a layer of polymer placed between two high-density pieces of gypsum. This product is highly rated for sound dampening and was tested by an outside acoustical laboratory. Installation of this product is just like installation of standard gypsum wallboard, and all of the boards have tapered edges for ease of reinforcement of joints with tape and compound. SoundBreak Gypsum has been designed to offer superior mold and mildew resistance. The manufacturer recommends a drywall primer be applied prior to any decorative painting and the surface should be clean and dust free. With the exception of installation, avoid any penetration of this board whenever possible to achieve the best performance from this product.
