Textured plaster
Plaster is a building material made from gypsum, lime and water. This material is frequently found in older homes and, in fact, was used almost exclusively to build walls until drywall became popular in the 1950s. It is frequently installed over wooden strips, called laths, and used to construct walls and ceilings. Sometimes it is installed over concrete walls instead, which is a less-common application. If you have plaster walls in need of repair, rest assured that repairing these walls is fairly simple and can generally be completed in just a few days.
Instructions
1. Secure any loose plaster sections to the concrete. Using a drill with a masonry bit, use plaster washers to tighten any sagging sections. Washers should be placed 8 to 12 inches apart.
2. Clear the loose plaster and debris out of any holes or cracks using your hands or a wire brush. This ensures the new plaster can adhere properly to the surface.
3. Moisten any cracks or holes that need repairing by "painting" them with a paintbrush dipped in water.
4. Blend a plaster repair mix with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Blend only as much as you can apply in 1 hour, because this material dries out very quickly.
5. Use a trowel to apply the plaster repair mix to every hole or crack. For very narrow cracks, it may be easier to apply the plaster repair mix using a caulk gun or grout bag.
6. Wait 24 hours for the patched areas to dry, then sand them using a light-grit sandpaper. Your walls are now ready to be primed and painted, if desired.
