Wallboard refers to the coverings of interior walls of a home replacing the plaster used in older homes. Plaster required some degree of craftsmanship and was tedious to put up. Wallboard, also called plasterboard, sheetrock or gypsum board, is the most often used type of wallboard placed in modern homes today. Different types of wallboard used in different rooms, such as a kitchen, bathroom or family room, help protect the walls from moisture.
Paperless Wallboard
Paperless wallboard is the same as gypsum wallboard, except that gypsum has paper wrapped around it and paperless wallboard has fiberglass wrapped around it, according to the website Calfinder. Paperless wallboard works in bathrooms, basements or any room that may have more of a moisture problem. Consider using paperless wallboard if you live in a high humidity area because paperless wallboard is mold resistant. The fiberglass wrapped around it is moisture resistant, as is the gypsum core. Use topping compound to finish paperless wallboard because the surface is a little rougher than other drywall.
Cement Board
Although a variety of wallboard works in the bathroom, such as green board and paperless wallboard because it is water resistant, they are not necessarily waterproof. Some local governments may have regulations against using green board over insulation with a moisture barrier usually found on the exterior walls. In this case, use cement board. Cement board is easy to install because it is lightweight and made of Portland cement and coated with a glass-fiber mesh, according to the Ask Tool Talk website. Install the cement board from ceiling to tub and then finish with tile the same height. Cement board does not need tile to help protect against moisture, but the surface is rough and tile is the best covering for this type of wallboard.
Decorative Wallboard
Eliminate the need to cover your wallboard by purchasing decorative wallboard. Decorative wallboards are panels nailed or screwed into wall studs or used as the outer layer over gypsum, according to the website Online Tips. Decorative wallboards are prefinished in a variety of colors and textures and perform just as well as gypsum or other types of durable wallboards, but eliminate the need to install tile or to paint. Decorative wallboard has an attractive smooth finish due to the application of vinyl covering applied during the manufacturing process. This makes the decorative wallboards strong and last for many years without the colors fading. Decorative wallboard is flame resistant and is generally no thicker than about 1/8 inch. Decorative wallboard is also strong, resistant to nicks and gouges, and an excellent wallboard to use in high traffic areas.
