Doors are typically functional passageways which get you from place A to place B. However, a doorway arch makes a door a piece of artwork. It's never too late to turn an old, rectangular door into a rounded masterpiece. Nor does it take heavy construction. With a trip to the hardware store and a free afternoon, you can transform the look of your doorway. Read on to learn install a doorway arch.
Instructions
1. Make a trip to the hardware store and purchase two doorway arches, one for each side of the door.
2. Place one of the arches into place in the corner of the doorway. Look for the pre-drilled holes in the arch. Use a cordless drill to drill through these holes into the studs to form pilot holes.
3. Install the arch into place by screwing wood screws through the pre-drilled holes and into the pilot holes you have made. Use a manual screwdriver instead of the cordless drill. If you over-tighten the screws, the doorway arch could crack. With the manual screwdriver, you can tell if the arch is about to crack and stop tightening.
4. Cut a piece of plasterboard or drywall to fill in the area from the floor to the bottom of the arch. Line up the drywall with the arch so the side of the door forms a straight line. Attach the plasterboard or drywall with plasterboard nails or drywall nails. Cut a piece of corner bead to the same length and attach the strip to both corners with the nails to round the corners off.
5. Use the same procedure for the second doorway arch on the other side of the door. If the doorway arches leave a gap at the top of the doorway, cut more plasterboard or drywall and corner bead to make the top of the doorway level.
6. Fill in the pre-drilled holes in the doorway arch with plaster and smooth them out with a putty knife. Also, attach self-adhesive tape around the joints of the drywall or plasterboard.
7. Apply joint compound in the joints of the drywall or apply plaster to plasterboard. Sand the surface to make it smooth. You may now paint your doorway arch.
