It has been said that everything is bigger in Texas. If you take that a bit further, it is safe to say that Texas, nicknamed the Lone Star State, is big in natural resources. Texas has a hearty and abundant supply of rich fertile soil and plenty of lakes, streams and rivers. Lumber, coal, oil, natural gas, salt, gypsum, biomass, solar power and sulfur also make up the state's natural resources.
Land
Many think of Texas as the land of cowboys. However, Texas is an important agricultural state and takes the lead in industries such as oil, sheep, cotton and cattle. Over 200,000 alligators and 2.5 million deer call Texas home.
Farms
Produce, eggs, poultry, dairy products, wheat, hay, rice, sugar cane, peanuts, fruits and vegetables hail from the Lone Star State. Even with all those healthy products grown in Texas, the state still manages to produce 75 percent of the world's Snickers bars. Also, it is illegal to sell Limburger cheese on Sunday in Houston.
Ranchers
Texas is considered cattle country and they do have their share of cowboys. It is against the law to draw graffiti on a cow other than your own, and a person can be hanged for stealing cattle.
Asphalt
Texas produces salt, sulfur, and asphalt--asphalt coming into play as Dallas Fort Worth Airport holds the title of The World's Largest Parking Lot. Amarillo airport is the alternate landing strip for the space shuttle. Also, it is illegal to spit on a sidewalk in Texas.
Fuel
Texas produces more petroleum, natural gas, and fuel than the rest of the United States. Reports even give Texas credit for the first powered airplane flight 40 years prior to the Wright Brothers launch in 1903.
