Repair Drywall Strong Enough to Hold a Curtain Rod
Curtain rods often loosen or damage the drywall underneath them. Eventually, the drywall won't be able to support the curtain rod, so the rod will fall. The best way to remedy the situation is removing the curtain rod and repairing the drywall underneath it. To create the strongest surface possible, it is a good idea to use a combination of fiberglass mesh tape and paper drywall tape to repair the damaged area. When you are done, the drywall will be strong enough to hold a curtain rod again.
Instructions
1. Remove all loose debris from the damaged area of drywall. Scrape away any protruding bits so that the entire surface is flush and smooth.
2. Check the joint-compound manufacturer's instructions to determine how much water you need. Measure out the correct amount of room-temperature water into a large, clean bucket.
3. Pour the joint-compound powder into the water a little bit at a time, stirring rapidly. The goal is to avoid clumps forming, so add slowly. The mixture will gradually thicken. Stop adding joint-compound powder when the mixture has a consistency slightly thicker than toothpaste.
4. Apply the joint compound to the damaged area, using a drywall knife.
5. Place a piece of fiberglass mesh tape over the joint compound. Use your drywall-finishing tools to push it deep into the joint compound. Wipe the area smooth.
6. Apply another coat of joint compound over the fiberglass mesh tape you just installed. Place a second piece of fiberglass mesh tape over the first and wipe it smooth.
7. Apply a third coat of joint compound over the area, then place a piece of paper drywall tape over the damaged area. Wipe away the excess joint compound.
8. Apply a fourth coat over the entire area, this time leaving a thick, smooth layer that completely hides the repair area. If necessary, use a large drywall tool, such as a 10- or 12-inch drywall knife.
9. Allow your work to completely dry. Sand the area with 100-grit sandpaper. Repeat the coating/sanding process until the area is completely smooth.
